Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry has played down the club’s chances of signing Bristol Rovers defender Connor Taylor this summer as the Gas and new director of football Ricky Martin look to stand firm when it comes to dealing with interest in their prized assets.

Bristol Live understands that Peterborough made an opening bid for the centre-back last month but the offer was nowhere near a figure that would have even started negotiations. A second bid has not been lodged.

Other League One clubs are understood to be interested in the 23-year-old but have not yet submitted an enquiry, let alone an opening bid.

Fry confirmed Peterborough’s interest in Taylor last month when reports first emerged linking the Cambridgeshire outfit and has since admitted to the Peterborough Telegraph that their chances of signing the Rovers favourite are slim given the option of a further year in his contract on top of the remaining year.

“Ricky Martin was at Stoke when they sold Connor to Rovers a couple of years back,” the Posh director of football said. “They paid a lot of money for him. I spoke to Ricky at Wembley about Connor, but he has two years left on his contract at Rovers which makes things more difficult for us as there is no immediate pressure to sell.”

Taylor was named Rovers’ player of the season last term as the Gas were relegated to League Two. He made 48 appearances across all competitions.

Over three seasons in north Bristol, the centre-back has totalled over 130 matches for the Pirates, having initially joined as a loanee from Stoke City in their 2021/22 League Two promotion campaign.

Following a year back in the Potteries, Taylor re-joined Rovers on a permanent basis in summer 2023 for a fee, at the time, reported to be in the region of £300,000. Martin was on the other end of the negotiations as Stoke’s technical director.

Despite the club’s relegation, the Gas are not in a position where they are under pressure to sell their prized assets this summer, of which Taylor certainly is one.

Posh finished 18th in League One last campaign as injuries and other issues compounded towards the club’s lowest finish in 17 years. However, they have a rich pedigree for purchasing young talent and selling on for considerable profit with a number of former players reaching the Premier League.
