Kate Middleton might be known for being one of the leading royal figures in the British royal family, but she’s also a rule breaker.
The Princess of Wales might be known for her working duties alongside husband Prince William, and for her quiet and dignified messages as she overcame her cancer battle, but she’s also been one to shun royal protocol and she’s not the only one.
Kate, when she wed William in 2011, broke royal tradition and she took note from her future grandmother-in-law Queen Elizabeth II as her inspiration.

Kate and William’s wedding followed many of the usual royal traditions including a formal engagement announcement, seasonal flowers, having the ceremony at midday and making it a public holiday.

However, one previous royal rule saw only children included in the wedding party, yet Kate chose to embrace a more American custom instead.
By choosing her sister Pippa Middleton as her maid of honor, she broke away from the typical tradition seen in the royal family. Queen Elizabeth II also did the same when she wed Prince Phillip, by including her sister Princess Margaret as a bridesmaid.
Despite breaking one royal wedding tradition, Kate also kept others including dressing her bridal party in the same neutral color she wore. Whilst modern traditions sees bridesmaids in colour or even sometimes in black, in stark contrast to the bridal white for the wedding dress, it’s different for the royal family.
The British royal custom is just the opposite, with Pippa in ivory satin-based crepe gown that was designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, who also designed Kate’s wedding dress.

Despite the wedding rule break, Kate is known for her determination to carry on traditions and the standards of the monarchy.
Recently, a royal source told People that Kate is seen as the most popular member of the British royal family. They revealed: “She takes things seriously — and thank goodness for that.”
Royal author Valentine Low also spoke with the outlet, as he explained how Kate had “developed a toughness” that has helped her navigate royal life. He shared: “She has this public image of being nice and smiley. But she is strong-minded, strong-willed, and prepared to fight for what she wants and what she thinks is right.”
Royal expert and commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has also spoken in favor of Kate and her future in the royal family alongside William. He spoke with Fox News as he explained how her recent cancer fight had focused her determination: “The onset of a life-threatening illness can make a person tough.
“When they have a clear goal, as Kate has, the maintaining of the monarchy and bringing up her family means the experience, although traumatic, can be used to advantage in the years ahead.”
He continued: “She is a fashion icon, which she uses to enormous advantage. And she and William are so close, as their PDA clearly shows. They are the monarchy’s future. They work brilliantly as a team now, and they will continue to do so when William becomes king.”
