Anfield Stadium’s summer concerts resumed with a bang this week as Bruce Springsteen made his first ever appearance in Liverpool for two shows at the home of Liverpool FC. Anfield has played host to global superstars like Taylor Swift and The Rolling Stones since the Club started holding shows at the stadium in between football seasons.

This summer will see Bruce Springsteen, Dua Lipa and Lana Del Rey all taking to the stage for a series of incredible stadium shows – and the star-studded programme of events left many music lovers dreaming of who else may appear at the venue in future. We asked Liverpool ECHO readers to share their wishlist of which artists could play Anfield in coming years.

We were blown away with more than 2,000 responses to our survey – but one name kept coming up time and time again, emerging as the clear favourite. A whopping 682 people said they would like to see Sir Paul McCartney perform at Anfield in the future.

The Beatles star was the firm favourite among ECHO readers, with more than 300 votes separating him from the second most popular option. We offered readers 17 options they could choose between when voting for who they would like to see next at Anfield.

Adele came in third, with 250 votes, ahead of Bruce Springsteen with 199 votes, Harry Styles with 159 votes, Lewis Capaldi with 126 votes and then Madonna with 109 votes.

ECHO readers aren’t the only ones calling for a Sir Paul McCartney Anfield appearance. When reviewing Sir Paul’s recent Co-op Live Arena show, ECHO reporter Dan Haygarth said he wished the show had taken place in his home city.

Dan said: “The fact Sir Paul can still perform on stage with such energy and for so long at the age of 82 is nothing short of remarkable. His voice may waver occasionally, but otherwise ‘Got Back’ is a masterclass in live performance – combining lyrical genius, peerless musicianship and plenty of Scouse charm. Nobody does it like Paul McCartney.

“That said, as I watched our city’s favourite son charm Manchester – with images of Liverpool often popping up on the arena’s screens – I couldn’t shake the thought that this concert should have taken place down the M62. Yes, Co-op Live is a massive, new arena and it can host more than double the capacity of the M&S Bank Arena. But I think the highs of this gig would only have been intensified if it had been a true homecoming.

“I don’t think there’s any reason why he couldn’t play Manchester and Liverpool on the same tour. So, if I could be so bold as to offer the great man some advice – next time you tour the UK, make sure to get back to where you once belonged.”
