With 15 TV screens and two large projectors, The White Harte certainly isn’t mucking around when it comes to covering live sport.

The pub and self-styled sports bar on Park Row also has two pool tables and three dart boards, as well as a comprehensive all-day food menu and a vast choice of premium beers, lagers and ciders.

Once part of the ‘Scream’ chain, The White Hart is the closest pub to the main Bristol University buildings and it’s the first choice for many students.

Although there are no pavement tables for alfresco drinking, there’s a small ‘secret’ courtyard garden which gets packed on warm summer evenings.

But it’s the drinks and food deals that ensures this large pub near Park Street is busy all year round.

At a time when the cost of drinking in pubs is soaring – new figures this week show a pint of beer now costs 34p more than it did in February – student-friendly venues like The White Harte have to rely on deals to keep customers coming back.

Order a pint of Peroni or Tiny Rebel here and you won’t get much change out of £7 if you are a ‘normal’ customer at this student-friendly pub – and I was certainly the oldest in there by at least 25 years, if not 30.

But students can download an app with a host of exclusive deals, featuring £3.25 pints (including Moretti, Inch’s cider and Old Mout), burgers and pizzas for £6 and even a bottomless brunch that includes 90 minutes of unlimited drinks for £25.

There are two-for-one cocktails and these are also available as sharing pitchers, ideal for larger groups.

On the day I visited, there were no local real ales on offer but plenty to choose from when it came to big brand beers and lagers.

These included Neck Oil Session IPA, Brixton Reliance Pale Ale, Camden Hells, Tiny Rebel Rebel IPA, Tiny Rebel Clwb Tropica, Tiny Rebel Easy Livin’ Session Pale Ale, Brooklyn The Stonewall Inn IPA and Beavertown Gamma American Pale Ale.

Also on tap were Birra Moretti, Cruzcampo, Amstel, Peroni, Asahi and Guinness.

The food menu is extensive and includes pizzas, burgers, wraps, wings, mac ’n’ cheese and small plates.

One section of the menu concentrates on ‘rated plates’ – popular main courses including fish and chips, tandoori chicken skewers, Buddha bowls and ‘nduja ranch chicken (grilled chicken topped with bacon, mozzarella and BBQ sauce served with ‘nduja pork and chargrilled tomato jam, skin-on fries, onion rings and rocket).

And if you want something sweet, try the ice cream ‘crolls’ – baked croissant rolls filled with popcorn-flavoured ice cream and a choice of toppings including white chocolate sauce and popping candy.

Like all of those wallet-friendly drinks deals, these decadent desserts really hit the sweet spot.
