People had to be evacuated from their flats after a fire in Liverpool city centre. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were called to Bold Street at around 8pm on Sunday, June 8.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, there were reports of smoke coming from the ventilation system of a restaurant situated to the ground floor of a three-storey building. Following further inspection, a small fire in a restaurant kitchen was confirmed.

The fire had affected the ventilation system of the premises on Bold Street, with smoke from the extractor having travelled through the windows of the flats above. At the height of the incident, four fire engines attended the scene, with two firefighters within the restaurant to locate and extinguish the fire, and two firefighters entering the flats above to evacuate residents.

Crews found the fire and established an action plan to extinguish the blaze, cutting away at the ventilation system to check for fire spread. Fire crews also evacuated residents from the flats above and Merseyside Police were also called to manage the cordon.

When the ECHO arrived at the scene at around 9pm, one fire engine remained at the scene on Wood Street surrounded by a small cordon and people were able to walk freely. Bold Street was open as normal.

Remaining fire crew carried out precautionary checks for hotspots and continued to monitor temperatures. The fire service said they were liaising with the responsible person of the flats, with occupants allowed to return to their dwellings.
