Much exciting tennis was played on the opening day of women’s action at the Queen’s Club. There is another exciting schedule for Day 2 in London. 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu and Diana Shnaider will be among those in action. Yulia Putintseva vs Heather Watson

Head-to-head: Watson 3-2 Putintseva

Although Watson sits outside the Top 100, she is most likely to make a good run on grass. The Briton has also beaten Putintseva in their last two matches, disrupting the Kazakhstani with her power. Putintseva is a good grass-court player at her best, as she showed by winning the Birmingham Classic and beating Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon last year. Although it has been a challenging year for the 30-year-old, I do not trust Watson’s form enough to back an upset.

Prediction: Putintseva in 2

Diana Shnaider vs Magdalena Frech

Head-to-head: Shnaider 2-1 Frech

Last year’s Bad Homburg Open champion Shnaider should be confident of winning in this matchup. Despite being a solid all-around player, Frech is most likely to cause an upset on a hard court. 21-year-old Shnaider proved she can already play well on all surfaces by winning hard, clay, and grass titles in 2024. Her firepower and Frech’s not being as comfortable moving on grass compared to other surfaces should prove the difference.

Prediction: Shnaider in 2

Emma Raducanu vs Cristina Bucsa

Head-to-head: Bucsa 1-0 Raducanu

Raducanu cannot afford to underestimate Bucsa. The Spaniard’s flat shots and short swings will not overwhelm the home favorite with firepower, but it is a style that could be awkward to deal with on grass. Having said that, Raducanu is the more complete player, and she can be formidable on grass when she plays her best. Bucsa will unlikely have adequate defensive skills to handle the pressure from Raducanu’s groundstrokes.

Prediction: Raducanu in 2
