In Sunday’s UEFA Nations League third-place match, Germany lost 2-0 to France. The Germans outplayed the French for most of the first half until Kylian Mbappe scored right before the halftime whistle. This turned into a momentum swing that ended with an easy tap-in for Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, assisted by Mbappe.

Losing to France in a third place game is not a huge deal but Germany squandered four big chances. It did not help that VAR overturned a penalty kick opportunity and an actual goal by Deniz Undav.

Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi knew that Germany will want to quickly forget the poor outing (via @iMiaSanMia).

“Our goal is to win every game,” said Adeyemi. “We could have done that today; we should have taken our chances. We didn’t manage that today. If we take our chances in the future, we will win our games.”

The two losses this week proved to be painful reminders that Germany is painfully missing Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz in the attack. Until either or both of them return from injury, there are no serviceable options available to Julian Nagelsmann against elite competition.
