Inside Reno’s float therapy sanctuary

  • 11 June 2025

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – As life gets louder, some people are finding peace by completely turning down the volume.

In the heart of Reno, a two-story, 5,000-square-foot wellness center called Healing One is helping people reset through silence, darkness, and saltwater.

Twelve years ago, it was just a dream. Now, it’s a reality that’s more needed than ever, says founder Chaz Allen, who left a career as an electrician to open the center.

“In a world where we’re overstimulated, which we all are, what is 30, 60, 90 minutes away from everything? No phone, no girlfriend, no boyfriend, no cat, no dog, no nothing.”

At the core of Healing One is floatation therapy. Each tank contains more than 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt, creating buoyancy so strong you float effortlessly. Inside, it’s pitch black. No light. No sound. No gravity. No pressure. Many describe the sensation as floating through space, but most commonly as returning to the womb.

“It’s really like floating in a cloud, and not on a cloud,” Allen says.

The tanks don’t just provide physical relief. They also help regulate the nervous system. Allen explains that while we take in 11 million bits of information per second, we only process about 40. Float therapy gives the brain and body space to decompress—making it especially helpful for people living with anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

There are four different tank options, from traditional enclosed pods to spacious open pools. Allen calls one of them “the best for first timers,” designed for people who might be claustrophobic or just easing in.

Beyond floating, Healing One offers massage, reiki, indigenous healing, quantum touch, and an infrared sauna, with 10 to 15 practitioners on-site at any given time.

The health benefits don’t stop with sensory silence. All that Epsom salt is rich in magnesium, a mineral most Americans are deficient in. As you float, it’s absorbed through your skin, making it beneficial for everything from muscle recovery to mental health.

Allen, who has floated more than 600 times, says each session brings a new experience all shaped by your mood, your thoughts, and even your breath.

“How impactful can that nothingness be in a world where we have everything?”

And for those who believe in the power of healing but can’t afford it, scholarships are available. Chaz encourages anyone struggling financially to reach out directly. Whether you’re healing from trauma or simply seeking a break from the noise, the team at Healing One believes float therapy meets you exactly where you are, and helps bring you back to center.
