Prince William and Princess Kate’s love story started at St Andrews.
Prince William clearly knew the way to Princess Kate’s heart from the very beginning and it all started in the kitchen.
Back in 2019, the Princess of Wales revealed to baking icon Mary Berry just what kind of meals William would whip up for her when they were students at the University of St Andrews.
And while you might expect a future king to go all out with extravagant cuisine, his go-to dish was surprisingly simple and undeniably romantic.
Long before Prince William was whipping up royal duties, he was whipping up something far more down to earth a humble bowl of spaghetti Bolognese.
The now 42-year-old prince famously used the budget-friendly meal to impress his then-girlfriend, Kate Middleton, during their university days at St Andrews. And according to Kate herself, it definitely did the trick.
“He used to cook all sorts of meals. I think that’s when he was trying to impress me, Mary,” the Princess of Wales told beloved TV chef Mary Berry during a 2019 special. “Things like Bolognese sauce, and things like that.”
“It’s simple, affordable, and you can feed a crowd with just a few ingredients,” Michelin-starred chef and Great British Menu winner Tom Shepherd told HELLO!.
Trying to win over Kate Middleton with home cooked meals, the young prince didn’t exactly stick to simple student fare.
“When I was trying to impress Kate, I was trying to cook these amazing fancy dinners,” William once recalled.
“And what would happen is I would burn something, something would overspill, something would catch on fire… and she would be sitting in the background trying to help and basically taking control of the whole situation. So I was quite glad she was there at the time.”
Despite the kitchen chaos, Kate clearly saw something charming in William’s efforts and the rest is royal history.
As for whether the future King still dons an apron these days? “He sometimes does, actually,” Kate shared with Mary Berry. “He’s very good at breakfast.”
