Bristol Rovers are amongst the clubs showing an interest in Rotherham United striker Jonson Clarke-Harris this summer, Bristol Live understands, nearly five years after he left north Bristol.

The 30-year-old has a year remaining on his contract at the New York Stadium having re-joined the Millers from Peterborough United last summer. However, it is believed that the forward will be allowed to leave South Yorkshire this summer should the right offer come in for him.

Amid rumours that Rotherham will sanction an exit for Clarke-Harris this summer along with links to Rovers, the Rotherham Advertiser asked new Millers manager Matt Hamshaw about the 30-year-old’s situation at the club before reporting the Gas’ interest.

“There has been interest but it has only been interest,” Hamshaw confirmed. “No-one has put an offer on the table for us yet. Until we get (a suitable) one he is still our player.”

Clarke-Harris was close to a return to BS7 two years ago when a potential club-record £800,000 deal fell through in the final hour of the transfer window due to an admin issue.

The striker registered an impressive 101 goal contributions in 189 appearances for Peterborough during a four-year spell, helping Posh to promotion to the Championship in 2021. He won the League One golden boot twice while at London Road. He had also been at the club earlier in his career but didn’t make a first-team appearance.

His time back at Rotherham so far has been less successful, however, after scoring eight goals in 33 appearances last season in a disappointing campaign for the South Yorkshire outfit as they finished 13th in League One.

Clarke-Harris joined Rovers from Coventry City in January 2019, just after the departure of Darrell Clarke who has returned to the Pirates for a second spell as head coach.

The striker netted 27 goals in 52 appearances for the Gas over a year-and-a-half spell, helping them maintain their League One status. He then joined Peterborough for a reported £1.4million.

Rovers are yet to announce a signing this summer following their relegation to League Two, having seen 15 players depart at the end of the campaign along with Jamie Lindsay who departed by mutual consent.

The transfer window is now closed for a brief period until June 16 when it will be open until September 1.

Regarding strikers, the Pirates currently have Ruel Sotiriou and Promise Omochere on their books while Chris Martin, although he will be out of contract at the end of the month, will continue his rehabilitation at the Gas after picking up a knee injury in March.

Rovers players are due back at The Quarters on June 23 for the start of pre-season.
