Deacon Blue has revealed that band member James Prime is seriously ill in hospital. Posting on their official X account the Scottish rock band shared the news that James, the group’s keyboard player and co-founder, is continuing to undergo treatment in hospital for an undisclosed illness.

The band is due to kickstart a 15 arena date tour across the UK and Ireland later this year, arriving in Liverpool on September 19. The group, best known for hits including Dignity and Real Gone Kid, announced their bandmate will unfortunately be unable to take part in the tour.

Next year marks four decades since the band formed. The group consists of Ricky Ross, Lorraine McIntosh, James Prime, drummer Dougie Vipond, guitarist Gregor Philp and bassist Lewis Gordon. The new album is said to be a reflection of the band’s journey together and “honest to the age and experience they all share”.

The group took to social media to make the announcement. The post said: “Dear friends, We wanted to share some news with you about our brother, Jim.

“Unfortunately, he is seriously ill and undergoing care in hospital. We would like you to join us in wishing him well and to share your love with him.

“We spoke to Jim yesterday about Deacon Blue’s plans for the rest of the year, and he encouraged us to continue with love in our hearts and with his full blessing that the shows go ahead, even if it means replacing the irreplacablt James Miller Prime for the time being.

“Together with Jim’s family, we want to thank all the nurses, doctors and ICU staff for their ongoing care, professionalism and compassion.”

Taking to the comments, one fan said: “Sorry to hear this. My very best wishes to Jim.” A second said: “Sending love and best wishes xxxx”

A third added: “Gutted to hear this, praying Jim pulls through. One of my keys heroes and such a huge talent. Thoughts are with the band and Jim’s family.”

A fourth wrote: “All the best Jim. Thinking of your family and friends at this difficult time. Thanks to all the staff involved in Jim’s care, you are very much appreciated.”

The band confirmed the tour will still go ahead as planned without Jim. The keyboard player was one of the first members to help form the group 40 years ago.

Deacon Blue performed at On The Waterfront last year. Thousands descended upon the Pier Head to watch the band perform on stage. The festival returns next weekend, from Thursday, June 19 to Sunday June 22.
