Birmingham Airport has shut down claims that a plane carrying up to 242 people, which crashed in India this morning, was heading to the city.

The Air India passenger plane crashed in a fireball near Ahmedabad Airport.

Footage shared on social media showed black smoke billowing into the sky following the crash.

Officials have not yet confirmed if there have been any casualties.

A report by The Sun initially said a source had told the paper that the plane was heading to Birmingham.

But Birmingham Airport bosses said it was “not a BHX flight”.

London Gatwick has since confirmed that the plane was heading to the airport.

It said: “We can confirm that flight AI171 that crashed on departure from Ahmedabad Airport today was due to land at London Gatwick at 6.25pm.”

Emergency officials rushed to the site of the crash, pictures and videos on social media platform X show.

A spokesperson for Air India said: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick was involved in an accident on June 12.

“At this moment, we are ascertaining the details.”

The airline said it would share further updates at the earliest opportunity on its website.
