A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away . . . Wait, no that’s the other space opera series we’re thinking about. No matter.

Almost 40 years ago, comedy legend Mel Brooks released his own stylish take on the Star Wars universe with his 1987 comedy, Spaceballs. Now, after nearly four decades, Brooks’ cult favorite sci-fi parody will officially return with the long-rumored Spaceballs 2: a passion project Brooks has been sporadically pursuing for years.

If that weren’t exciting enough, Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed the 98-year-old Brooks will return for the long-awaited sequel, reprising his role as the fan-favorite Yoda parody, Yogurt, as reported by Deadline.

Spaceballs has long remained one of Brooks’ most popular films, matching the director’s equally beloved work on Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, The Producers and Robin Hood: Men in Tights, among many others.

As with most of Brooks’ movies, the film acts as a direct parody of well-known films and TV series: specifically, the space opera genre popularized by Star Trek and Star Wars. Set in a far distant future, Spaceballs follows a group of intergalactic adventurers attempting to thwart the evil Planet Spaceball (led by Brooks’ hilariously inept President Skroob and his right-hand man, Rick Moranis’ Dark Helmet.)

Plot details for the film have yet to be released, but the studio has described the film as a “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

Joining Brooks in the sequel’s cast is Josh Gad, who is expected to star in the film and serve as a producer and co-writer alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, both of whom collaborated on the script for Detective Pikachu. Josh Greenbaum, of Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar fame, will take over Brooks’ role as director for the sequel.

The movie is expected to arrive in theaters by 2027.
