On Wednesday, emergency services rushed to Green Lane Hospital in Devizes, after a man in his 20s climbed onto the roof of the building.

A cordon was put in place around the building as police negotiated with the man.

On the morning of Thursday, however, police said they had been forced to cordon off nearby Reeves Road after the patient moved from the hospital to the roof of a house in a housing estate.

Now, police have confirmed the incident was “resolved safely” and the patient has been detained under section 136 of the Mental Health Act and is now receiving appropriate ongoing care.

At midday on Thursday, June 12, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We are pleased to report that the incident involving a patient from Green Lane Hospital has now been resolved safely.

“Thank you for your patience while this was dealt with.”

The incident began at Green Lane Hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, June 11.

A spokesperson for the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service said they were called to Green Lane just after 1.30am.

The spokesperson said: “We were called at 1.38am this morning (11 June) to Green Lane, Devizes to support a police-led incident. One crew from Devizes attended and our stop came in at 5.49am when we left the scene.”

Following an extended period on the hospital roof, after 5am on June 12, the patient jumped off the roof of the hospital into a neighbouring field, before making his way into the estate.

In a statement posted on Devizes Police social media this morning, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Please be aware that we have cordoned off Reeves Road, Devizes, following a development in the Green Lane Hospital incident.

“Shortly after 5am this morning (12/06), the man, aged in his 20s, jumped off the roof of a building at the hospital and into a neighbouring field, and then made his way into a local housing estate, where he has climbed onto the roof of a residential house.

“We have set up a cordon on the street and are continuing to negotiate with the man.

“We appreciate this development will be concerning for local residents. Please be assured that the situation is being managed and residents are able to come and go from their properties.

“If you have any concerns then please don’t hesitate to speak to one of our officers.”
