American tennis continues to divide opinion after a mixed start to the 2025 season on both the ATP and WTA Tours.
It was a triumphant start to the season for the USA, who won the United Cup led by Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz.
However, it has not been so plain-sailing since then, with Fritz struggling with injury and having to withdraw from multiple recent tournaments.
This has led to a conversation between two former American players Jack Sock and Sam Querrey, as they discussed whether American tennis is overrated.

Not only did USA win a team competition to kick-off the 2025 season, but Madison Keys also won the Australian Open.
However, some other players including Frances Tiafoe have been criticized for their performances this season.
Despite this, former top 10 player Sock does not believe that the current crop of American players are overrated and explained how much potential they all have.
“I don’t think we overestimate them,” Sock said on the Nothing Major Podcast. “I think our loyalty lies with fellow American players. We want to see them be successful, we know how good they are and how hard the sport is.
“The majority of winners of tournaments since we have all known tennis, it’s not Americans, but I think we know how good the guys from America are and we want to see them do well and win so we probably side with them at times a little more.
“But, no, I do not think we are overestimating them, I think we like to see them do well and we know how good they are.”
There have been three women’s singles Grand Slam champions from the USA since 2020 (Sofia Kenin, Gauff and Keys), but no American man has won a major singles trophy since Andy Roddick in 2003.

Fritz reached the US Open final last year, and by doing so was the first American man to reach the final Sunday at a major tournament in 15 years.
Sam Querrey also stated that he agreed with Sock, claiming that the current American players are rated as they should be.
“I think we properly rate them,” said Querrey. “It’s not like we think a bunch of Americans, earlier in the week we said who do we think is going to win Roland Garros and all these clay court events.
“Nobody said an American. We are a little more optimistic when it gets to the grass, but I think we properly rate the Americans when it gets to the last 10 years.”
How have America’s top players been performing in 2025?
As previously mentioned, it has been a mixed season for the American players particularly on the ATP Tour.
From the top five American ranked players on the ATP Tour, only Fritz has won a title that came at a mixed team event.
The only American man to win an individual title this year is the resurgent Jenson Brooksby, who actually beat Tiafoe in the final in Houston.
Ben Shelton reached the Australian Open semi-finals, but has been unable to translate that form to the main tour.
There has been much more for America to cheer about on the WTA Tour, especially with Keys winning the first major tournament of the year at the Australian Open.
Gauff won her first nine matches of the year, but has since struggled to continue that form going.
As a result, Jessica Pegula has overtaken Gauff as the new American number one after winning the Charleston Open, which was her second WTA title of the season.
There have also been title wins for Emma Navarro, Amanda Anisimova and McCartney Kessler.
American players have another opportunity to add to their trophy cabinet at upcoming clay court tournaments, with Tiafoe, Sebastian Korda, Brandon Nakashima and Reilly Opelka playing in Barcelona, while Shelton and Marcos Giron compete in Munich.
On the WTA side of things, Gauff, Pegula, Navarro and Danielle Collins are all competing at the stacked tournament in Stuttgart.
