• Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not attended a Trooping the Colour since Harry’s father King Charles took the throne in 2022.
  • Trooping the Colour takes place every June—when the weather is most favorable in London—and is the annual birthday celebration of the monarch.
  • Meghan, for her part, had plans to be honored at a gala on June 14 in Los Angeles, but that event was postponed amid protesting in the city.

King Charles’ third Trooping the Colour since taking the throne on September 8, 2022 is today—and his younger son Prince Harry and Harry’s wife Meghan Markle are not in attendance at the annual birthday parade for the monarch. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not attended a Trooping the Colour since 2022, which marked Queen Elizabeth’s last birthday parade and was part of her Platinum Jubilee celebrating her historic 70 years on the throne.

While Harry grew up attending the annual event, Meghan participated in two Trooping the Colours—her first, in 2018, just a month after marrying into the royal family that May 19, and her second, in 2019, just weeks after welcoming her first child, Prince Archie, on May 6.

In 2018, Meghan wore a protocol-breaking, off-the-shoulder blush pink dress by Carolina Herrera and a matching hat by Philip Treacy. “Traditionally, the Trooping the Colour events are seen as a more formal day event,” royal etiquette expert Myka Meier told People at the time. “In the past, we have seen female royals wearing conservative dress, much like that which you would see at a British wedding—wearing closed-toe shoes, stockings, hats, and dresses or skirts with a modest hemline and with sleeves.”

In 2019, Meghan wore a navy ensemble by her wedding dress designer Clare Waight Keller and a matching hat by Noel Stewart. To attend that year’s Trooping the Colour, Meghan interrupted her maternity leave, which didn’t surprise a source speaking to People. “Meghan is on maternity leave, but Trooping is a family occasion,” the insider shared. “You don’t skip the Queen’s birthday. She’s the Queen!”

The annual occasion was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2022 they attended the event, but didn’t join the royal family on the Buckingham Palace balcony as they had done in 2018 and 2019 because, by this point, Harry and Meghan were no longer working royals following their 2020 step back. They watched the festivities instead from a room above Horse Guards Parade along with other non-working royals.

For King Charles’s first Trooping the Colour in 2023, Harry and Meghan were not invited, nor were they in 2024. Whether they were invited in 2025 or not remains unclear but, considering Harry’s relationships—or lack thereof—with his father King Charles and brother Prince William, it’s safe to assume they weren’t. That said, Meghan had other plans, anyway—she was set to be honored on June 14 at L.A.’s Natural History Museum’s Night of Wonder Gala, where she was also due to give remarks before the event was postponed amid protests in the city.

When it takes place, the garden-themed event will highlight Meghan’s work “empowering women and underserved communities,” People reported.

“We are proud to honor Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, a native Angeleno, whose work to advance community wellbeing and expand opportunity—especially for underserved communities—aligns with our equity-focused approach to developing science literacy for the next generation,” said Lori Bettison-Varga, president and director of the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County.

“Los Angeles needs us to channel our energy toward supporting our neighbors and demonstrating the values that make our city and county strong,” Bettison-Varga said in a statement about the planned June 14 event, per People.

It is unknown when the rescheduled date will take place.
