A Merseyside man arrested in connection with the double murder of two people in Spain was today remanded in custody. Earlier today, Merseyside Police said a 44-year-old man was detained on Friday evening and appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court this morning, Saturday 14 June.

The hearing was the start of extradition proceedings to Spain and Michael Terrence Riley was remanded into custody to appear at the same court on June 19. He is facing extradition after an international arrest warrant was issued by the Spanish authorities who want to question him about a double murder at an Irish bar in Fuengirola.

The two men were shot dead and are understood to be Scots Eddie Lyons Junior and Ross Monaghan. They died after a gunman opened fire outside Monaghans Bar at around 11pm on May 31. The gunman then fled in the car with both men dying at the scene.

Eddie Lyons Junior and Ross Monaghan were connected to the Lyons family, a major organised crime group based in the west of Scotland. The two men had been watching the Champions League final with friends when they were targeted on the Andalusian town’s beachfront.

Police Scotland previously said the attack did not appear to be linked with a series of criminal acts by rival groups in Scotland.

In a statement Merseyside Police said today: “We can confirm yesterday evening, Friday 13 June, a man was arrested in connection with two fatal shootings in Spain on 31 May.

“The 44-year-old man from Merseyside appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court this morning, Saturday 14 June, for the commencement of extradition proceedings to Spain. He has been remanded into custody to appear in court at a later date.”
