Andre Onana has admitted he does not know whether he will stay at Manchester United this summer.

The Cameroon international arrived at Old Trafford from Inter Milan back in July 2023. Onana replaced legendary former United stopper David de Gea, who left M16 that summer on a free transfer.

And life has been tough for De Gea’s successor, with Onana making several high-profile errors under head coach Ruben Amorim last season. Onana’s struggles have led to speculation that he could depart United this summer, ahead of an anticipated rebuild under Amorim. The Manchester Evening News understands the club are “open” to offers for most players so they can sell to buy.

Now, Onana has thrown further doubt over his future while speaking to local media in Cameroon. “I don’t know. We’ll see,” he said when asked by Afrik-Foot whether he could leave United this summer.

Previous reports from The Athletic have claimed that Onana is likely to stay at the club – despite his high-profile mistakes since arriving in M16. He signed a five-year deal at United and the fee was amortised over the entire length of that contract, meaning his value stands at around £26million, a fee which would need to be matched by any potential buyer.

Amorim previously defended Onana after he endured a particularly bad game against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals. His errors came after stinging criticism from ex-United midfielder Nemanja Matic.

“It can happen,” Amorim said about Onana’s mistakes. “If you play football, you’ll play a lot of games, and you can make mistakes. If you look at the season, I make more mistakes than them during these last games and these last months. The other thing is we have one more game to change everything and that should be our focus.

“I don’t know [if Matic had unsettled Onana], that can happen.

“The best thing is to look at the goals, all the actions that Andre had in the game, talk with [Jorge] Vital and Craig [Mawson], as that is the best way to help any player. It’s to focus on the game, what happened, what we need to improve and then put the player in.

“I didn’t see [Onana], to be honest with you. I use these minutes to try to calm down, so to come here to say the right things.”
