Birmingham City are moving closer to the signing of Kanya Fujimoto ahead of their return to the Championship, it has been claimed.

Reports in Portugal, via Sport TV, claim Fujimoto is ‘getting closer and closer’ to joining Blues from Primeira Liga side Gil Vicente on a free transfer.

And there has been another update in the last 24 hours with journalist Sebastiao Sousa-Pinto telling his YouTube channel that Blues are inching towards a deal that will give boss Chris Davies more attacking options.

“I’m talking about Kanya Fujimoto, the midfielder whose contract with Gil Vicente ended and who is now a free agent and, as far as I can tell, 90%, 95% has been agreed with Birmingham City,” he said.

“The clock is still ticking to seal the deal. We’ll have to keep waiting, but the feeling has been very positive for a few weeks now.

“The feeling is still very positive for the transfer to be completed, but we’re still taking it one step at a time until we can close this deal, and Kanya Fujimoto can then join the Championship team as a free agent, once again after his contract with Gil Vicente ended.”

Fujimoto made 10 goal contributions in 30 games in the Portuguese top flight last season to help Gil Vicente finish 13th in the table.

Primarily used as a number 10, Fujimoto has spent the last five years with Gil Vicente, first on loan for two years before joining permanently from Tokyo Verdy in 2022.

His contract expires at the end of June and sources in Portugal expect him to depart Gil Vicente – and St Andrew’s could be his next stop.

Blues already have one left-footed number 10 in their squad in the form of Iceland international Willum Willumsson, but lost Kieran Dowell at the end of last season after his successful loan from Rangers.
