Leading international theatre director Maxim Didenko is directing Oscar Wilde’s Salomé in the West End this autumn.

In a co-production with the Theatre Royal Haymarket and the Gesher Theatre, Salomé will play at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London from 30 September to 11 October 2025.

Written by Oscar Wilde (The Importance of Being Earnest) in 1891, this lyrical one-act play tells the biblical tale of Salomé, the stepdaughter of the lecherous ruler Herod Antipas, and her infatuation with John the Baptist.

The play was initially banned in Britain by the Lord Chamberlain, a ban that was only lifted in 1931 when Salomé ran at the Savoy Theatre in London, and marked Oscar Wilde’s first great theatrical success.

Maxim Didenko’s highly stylised production promises to be a bold, provocative and decadent retelling of Oscar Wilde’s classic, in which beauty becomes a weapon and a kiss can mean death.

Casting is to be announced.

The production is designed by Galya Solodovnikova, with music by French composer Louis Lebe, and lighting design by Gleb Filshtinsky.

The Gesher Theatre (Gesher meaning ‘bridge’ in Hebrew) is based in Jaffa, and features a repertory troupe of immigrant artists, with a mission to build bridges between cultures and an emphasis on international collaboration. Salomé is Gesher’s first production in the UK since they played the Barbican in 1999.

The drama is produced by Ekaterina Kashyntseva, and co-produced by Len Blavatnik, who is owner of the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Salomé is playing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London from 30 September to 11 October 2025.

Currently playing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket is The Deep Blue Sea starring Tamsin Greig until 21 June. Coming up is the National Theatre’s hit new play Till the Stars Come Down from 1 July to 27 September 2025; followed by David Harewood, Toby Jones and Caitlin FitzGerald in Othello from 23 October 2025 to 17 January 2026.
