A Merseyside man this morning appeared in court in connection with two fatal shootings at a Spanish bar on May, 31. The 44-year-old man, who was not named by police, was arrested yesterday evening and appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court this morning, Saturday 14 June.

The hearing was the start of extradition proceedings to Spain and he was remanded into custody to appear in court at a later date. It is understood he was taken into custody in Liverpool by Merseyside Police under an international arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities.

The two men shot dead, understood to be Scots Eddie Lyons Junior and Ross Monaghan, died after a gunman opened fire outside Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola, Malaga on May 31. The attack took place at around 11pm, when a car pulled up outside the bar and a masked man got out before opening fire on the pair. The gunman then fled in the car, with both men dying at the scene.

Both men were connected to the Lyons family, a major organised crime group based in the west of Scotland. The two men had been watching the Champions League final with friends when they were targeted on the Andalusian town’s beachfront.

In a statement released, Police Scotland said the attack did not appear to be linked with a series of criminal acts by rival groups in Scotland.

The statement read: “The investigation into the fatal shootings in Fuengirola is being carried out by Spanish police. Police Scotland is supporting Spanish police where requested, however, at this time we have no officers deployed within Spain.

“There is currently no intelligence to suggest the deaths of these two men in Spain are linked to the recent criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge.”

Scottish detectives have been helping the Spanish police with their investigation, providing information on the men’s backgrounds. The force also said there was nothing to suggest that the shooting was planned in Scotland.
