Kate Middleton made a remarkable public appearance at this year’s Trooping the Colour, wearing a blue dress and hat that drew clear inspiration from a beloved style moment of Princess Diana. The Princess of Wales, who has been largely out of the spotlight during her cancer treatment, made heads turn in an elegant outfit that paid tribute to her late mother-in-law.

Princess Diana famously wore a blue and white Catherine Walker ensemble during her 1992 visit to New Delhi. According to InStyle, Kate’s choice to wear a similar shade and silhouette served as a respectful nod to Diana’s legacy, a move that didn’t go unnoticed by royal watchers.

Trooping the Colour is a long-standing royal tradition that marks the sovereign’s official birthday, even though King Charles’ actual birthday is in November. This year’s ceremony held even more emotional weight, as both the King and the Princess of Wales are going through their own cancer treatments.

Kate’s attendance was uncertain until just before the event. Last year, she missed many public engagements while undergoing chemotherapy.

In a heartfelt social media update, she wrote, “On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.”

She continued, “I’m looking forward to attending the King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet.”
