Burnham-On-Sea pupils at St Andrew’s Junior School have enjoyed a week of fun activities during its second annual Sports Week.
Pupils and staff took part in a wide range of action-filled sessions designed to inspire a love of fitness and movement.
Activities included Mini Warriors, a fun fitness bootcamp; Boogie Bounce, a high-energy, dance-inspired exercise session using mini trampolines with handles; and cheerleading workshops led by the Weston-based Bellatrix Dance Company.
The children also experienced Bounce Fitness, an energetic class using bouncy rebound boots; yoga sessions led by St Andrews’ very own yoga-trained teacher, Rachel; and skateboarding workshops with Alex from Team Rubicon.
Head of PE Lindsey Sylvester says: “The week was organised to give children a taste of alternative, exercise-based activities and to encourage them to step out of their comfort zones and try something new.”
“Many of the activities challenged pupils to build their perseverance and resilience, skills that will serve them well both in and out of school.”
“With the rise in childhood obesity and a growing lack of exercise linked to increased screen time, the school wanted to introduce children to activities they may not have seen or experienced before, and to give them a boost towards achieving their recommended daily activity levels.”
A pupil said: “I really enjoyed Sports Week – I got to try skateboarding, which I’ve never done before.” Another added: “I liked the bootcamp – even when I had to do the push-ups!”
A teacher added: “It was fantastic to see every child taking part in all the activities throughout the week. This week opens them up to experiences they may not otherwise get the chance to try, and it encourages them to give new and unfamiliar things a go.”
Staff also got involved, with teachers given their own taste of the bootcamp during a special after-school session. Bellatrix Dance Company further extended the fun by running an after-school session for pupils who wanted to enjoy even more activity time.
