Celtic’s defence produced an interesting season last time out.

Brendan Rodgers’ side didn’t concede until Premiership game number seven against Ross County, including four goals shipped after 20 league matches.

Cameron Carter-Vickers is the main guy at the back, with Auston Trusty and Liam Scales fighting for the other spot, but unable to cement their place in Celtic’s XI, despite that strong start.

There has been a lot of noise around Celtic needing another centre-back, especially with Maik Nawrocki not being provided with the chances.

The supporters want to see more quality brought in, especially after the iffy performances in 2025, as well as questions over how they would fare in the revamped Champions League over the long run.

But is Rodgers’ defensive answer closer to home?

Kieran Tierney has returned to Celtic, and fans are over the moon that one of their own has returned to where it all began.

Rather than playing at left-back, where Tierney has excelled in his career, Frank McAvennie suggested that he could play as the left-sided centre-back.

If that happens, McAvennie told his Let Me Be Frank Podcast that Greg Taylor could then stay and still play enough matches in his usual position.

“How many times have we been looking for a left-sided centre-half?” asked McAvennie. “He’s (Tierney) your man. He will step in there, and then Greg (Taylor) can play in there (at left-back).

“I think it could work. The two of them could play 30 games a season. It’s not a bad thing. Whether Celtic want to give Greg the money that he feels that he deserves.

“I was hoping that he would sign, but it looks like he isn’t going to.”

Greg Taylor’s issues at Celtic amid ‘world-class’ Tierney capture

Taylor has divided opinion like nobody else before, and some would argue that it’s probably the right time to leave.

McAvennie highlighted Taylor’s issues in defence, all whilst calling Tierney a ‘world-class’ player, as the duo go in opposite directions.

“I am not going to have a go at Greg,” said McAvennie. “I think he has been magnificent for Celtic. I think he has been a wonderful talent.

“The defence has been a wee bit (questionable), for me. But going forward, and doing everything that Brendan wants him to do was magnificent, by Greg. But we are getting a world-class player.”
