Brenden Aaronson scored his first goal for the United States since 2023 in a 5-0 victory against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday.
The playmaker may have had a solid season for Leeds United, but with the USA struggling on the international stage of late, Aaronson has certainly felt the effect of that too.
It was a terrific night for Mauricio Pochettino’s men in the Gold Cup, though, and the Leeds man will be hoping that his 82nd-minute contribution will be enough to break the floodgates going forward.

It has been a tough time for Aaronson’s US of late, with results being way off the standards expected.
However, it was a solid 5-0 victory on Sunday (15 June) and something that Pochettino will be keen to build upon, after calls for him to be sacked already.
Aaronson has certainly come under his fair share of criticism, too, with a failure to contribute goals leading to plenty of questions over his quality.
As a result, the 24-year-old did not start the game but rather was brought on as a substitute in the 74th minute.
Aaronson certainly had the desired effect, though, scoring his side’s fourth goal and earning media praise for his performance.
GOAL gave the Leeds man a rating of eight out of ten, calling him a “real spark” off the bench after finding the moment he needed.
NBC were also complimentary about his return to the score sheet, opting for a rating of seven.

The American produced fairly solid numbers for Leeds this term, although there was some feeling of disappointment given the attacking threat that the Whites possessed.
With that carrying through to international level, it will surely leave questions on the manager’s mind of whether his current player has what it takes to perform at Premier League level.
Leeds may choose to upgrade.
Last time out in the top flight, the US international managed just one goal and three assists despite playing regularly, and he probably hasn’t done enough to suggest he could fix that form enough for a return.
Although he has seemingly stepped it up for the USA after a while of waiting, the Whites have been linked with moves for Emi Buendia and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, suggesting that Daniel Farke thinks the future holds a different path for both parties.
