After iconic Jewellery Quarter pub The Clifden reopened in December, new landlord Will Young named one achievement he wants the pub to be recognised for.

Forming a team with Hennessey’s owner Gary McDonnell and Kiran Chavda from The Witton Arms, The Lord Clifden looks in safe hands with people who know the industry.

With positive feedback from patrons so far, there is one recognition the pub is waiting to achieve.

Speaking to BirminghamLive, Will revealed getting The Clifden in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide would be ‘icing on the cake’.

He added: “It might be a small pride thing, but for me, you only get into the Good Beer Guide if your real ale is top notch.

“That’s not all a pub has to be, there’s so much more to a pub.

“But real ale’s a struggling industry and on the decline each year. As soon as we have no real ale on, people will miss it.

“We’re one of the few countries in the world that does real ale and cask ale, it’s a nice quirky unique British thing to have.

“I love beers for all occassion but I have a personal thing to do my part for the real ale industry.

“The Good Beer Guide would be a beautiful thing for me and I want to get in the conversation about serving the best Guinness in Birmingham too.

“All beer deserves to be looked after and cask ale is one of them for me.”

The CAMRA Good Beer Guide is regarded by many as the definitive outlet for recognising the best real ale pubs across the country.

Whilst Will waits to see if The Clifden will be recognised by CAMRA, another group of people have already taken to the pub.

He said: “West Bromwich Albion fans are absolutely loving us, it seems.

“We’re not actually a football pub, we’re a pub which shows football, but the Baggies have definitely been supporting us.

“I’ve opened up early when West Brom have an early kick off and they eat our breakfasts out of stock.

“Then they come back after the game which is always a good sign.

“We love them but we love all the Birmingham and Midlands teams to be honest.

“Everyone’s welcome and we have lots of families come in on the West Brom days and there is never any problem.”
