In 1988, the Earl married Sylvana Tomaselli, a Canadian-born academic descended from the aristocratic Austrian branch of the Tomaselli family, at Leith Registration Office near Edinburgh. As Sylvana is a Roman Catholic, George was excluded from the line of succession, thanks to the Act of Settlement of 1701 – a barring that was later reversed when the Succession to the Crown Act 2013 came into effect.

Together, the couple have three children: Edward Windsor, Lord Downpatrick; Lady Marina Windsor; and Lady Amelia Windsor. Edward (known as ‘Eddie’ to his friends) remains barred from the line of succession due to his faith, and is in line to become the first Roman Catholic Earl since the Reformation when he inherits his father’s estate. After a stint at JP Morgan, he co-founded the fashion label FIDIR, which creates designs inspired by the Scottish Highlands. Clearly, the call of the outdoors was strong: in 2021, Downpatrick also founded Aristeia Travel, a company that organises tours and expeditions to various destinations worldwide, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Lady Marina Windsor recently announced her engagement to her boyfriend of two years, Nico Macauley
