Wales had become a popular country for The Witcher’s production team find good filming locations in. Season 3 had multiple scenes for the mid-season, Season 4 went to Wales for its final episodes, now Season 5 is returning there for the final time.
The Witcher Season 3 locations to be used in Season 5
We’ve learned that The Witcher production is going back to Trefil Quarry and its surroundings in Wales and they’ve already started filming there.
Trefil Quarry and its surrounding areas were used quite heavily in the middle section of Season 3 as they stood for the outdoors areas of Thanedd. That’s where the surprisingly short encounter between Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer and Rience happened, for instance, the subsequent farewell between Yen and Ciri or where Ciri finally met Cahir.
The quarry itself was used for a brief scene where Vilgefortz makes Yennefer’s portal malfunction and she sees an illusion of a fake Geralt coming for her.
The production has set up camp as you can see in the image below. Cameras have been rolling during the day around those rocks/cliff over there.
It’s hard to say whether the locations will be used for Thanedd again or for something else. We’ll keep an eye on who among the cast is in Wales at the moment.
The Witcher Season 4 is in post-production for a 2025 release. Andrzej Sapkowski’s new Witcher book Crossroads of Ravens is available in Poland and will be released internationally in September 2025. CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4 is now in full production.
