Jay Stansfield is currently out in Slovakia playing for England under-21s at the European ChampionshipsBirmingham City striker Jay Stansfield in action for England under-21s
Jay Stansfield wants to solve the problematic striker position for England’s under-21s in their quest to retain their European Championships title.
Birmingham City hot-shot Stansfield is the only recognised centre-forward in Lee Carsley’s squad after Liam Delap opted to represent new club Chelsea at the Club World Cup instead.
Stansfield has been a substitute in England’s opening two group games in Slovakia with Carsley preferring to play without a striker.
Marseille forward Jonathan Rowe is instead operating as a false nine but England looked more threatening in their 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Sunday once Stansfield was introduced.
The 22-year-old scored 23 times for Blues last season and hopes to get the nod when England take on Germany in their final group game on Wednesday.
“I’ve got to be confident and show belief in myself and if I get that opportunity to put the ball in the back of that net then that’s something I love doing,” Stansfield told MailOnline.
“It’s a great feeling to do that for my club but I’m sure it’ll be even more special for England.”
Carsley made two changes for England’s second game and plans to freshen things up again for Germany. Stansfield is one of those in contention to start.
“Jay did well when he came on,” Carsley said. “He gave us that focal point, gave us that threat in behind and had a couple of chances. We need to freshen it up for the Germany game.”
