Liverpool’s potential swap deal involving Darwin Nunez and Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez ‘makes a lot of sense,’ according to ex-Red Dietmar Hamann.

The Premier League champions have been incredibly busy already this summer in the transfer market, and are now being encouraged to pursue Atletico Madrid’s World Cup-winning striker, who left Manchester City just a year ago and has since thrived in La Liga.

Alvarez netted 29 times for Diego Simeone’s side but is rumoured to be considering a return to England. Hamann believes that a swap deal involving £85million flop Nunez, who is currently surplus to requirements at Anfield, would benefit all parties involved.

Nunez continues to find game time and goals hard to come by at Liverpool. Despite being the club’s most expensive signing ever, ahead of the impending arrival of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m, he has failed to justify his huge transfer fee over the past three seasons.

Hamann told Wette.de: “I’d love to see Julian Alvarez at Liverpool and I think Darwin Nunez being part of the deal would make a lot of sense. I think Nunez is tailor made for Atletico Madrid as a physical centre forward, someone who will work so hard which is what Diego Simeone wants.

“Alvarez would also be a fantastic addition at Liverpool, he played in the shadow of Erling Haaland at Manchester City but really added to his reputation in Madrid. He led the line, scored goals and made life a nuisance for the back lines he played against, I think he would be a brilliant signing.

“There are whispers about other forwards, but Alvarez would be a smashing addition to Liverpool and Nunez might just be an even better signing for Atletico.”

Alvarez has previously impressed in the Premier League during his two-year stint in Manchester, scoring 36 goals across both seasons despite playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland.

However, the player himself has shown little inclination to leave the Spanish capital.

Atletico’s club president Enrique Cerezo has also declared: “Julian Alvarez is a player of Atletico de Madrid. He’s very happy here, he is our player and he will remain our player. He was raised at Atletico Madrid and he will die at Atletico Madrid.”

Liverpool have been linked with a new striker as they close in on the signings of Wirtz and Milos Kerkez. Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike is another forward rumoured for a move to Anfield, although there is growing interest in him from other Premier League clubs.
