Birmingham City are embarking on a busy summer crafting a new-look squad to make an assault on the Championship promotion race.

After a record-breaking campaign in League One, when they set a new EFL points record in storming to the title, Blues are now keen to kick on – and the Premier League is their aim.

It is all a far cry from the last time they were a Championship team, relegated on the final day of the season when new owners Knighthead were still finding their feet as custodians of a proud old club.

If there was a debt to be paid, Knighthead did it in spades last term as they bankrolled a new manager in Chris Davies and a squad that blew their rivals away. Now on to the next stage.

Blues and their Championship rivals will receive their fixtures for the new season on Thursday, June 26 – a day after Davies’ squad are due to report to the club’s Elite Performance and Innovation Centre for the start of pre-season testing.

However, there is one big change this year. Traditionally, the fixtures for the forthcoming season have come out at 9am, but this year it will be at noon.

Then later that day, at 4:30pm, clubs and their fans will learn the first round draw for the Carabao Cup, which will take place live on Sky Sports News.

Blues will play their first pre-season friendly in Portugal at the end of a week-long training camp, which begins on July 7, before returning home for domestic friendlies with Solihull Moors, Northampton and Port Vale.

The first round of Championship fixtures are then scheduled to take place over the weekend of August 8 to 10, with Carabao Cup first-round ties coming in the following week. According to the EFL, the scheduled 46 rounds of Championship matches will take place over 33 weekends, nine midweeks and four Bank Holidays.
