The flick, directed by JJ Abrams, will follow an author who reveals his fictional world is actually a reality.
It is also set to star Jenna Ortega and movie legend Samuel L Jackson.
Bothwell Street in the city centre has been transformed into a set for the blockbuster.
Shops and businesses on the busy road have undergone a futuristic makeover while several roads around the area were closed.
Powell was spotted chatting with director JJ Abrams as they discussed the scene.
Crew members were seen soaking the street with hoses as they prepared the street.
He was later scene donning his costume, a tan and green trench coat, and walking through the streets as filming began.
Powell was filmed walking along the street as extras on foot and in the futuristic cars.
In one apparently bizarre scene, the movie star walked into a entryway with a giant finger pointing at the entrance.
Scores of movie fans gathered at nearby barriers on Blythswood Street hoping to see the cinema star.
Powell was snapped filming scenes under the Kingston Bridge yesterday.
