For those who are fans of gripping World War II dramas, The Bombardment is definitely one to watch. The gripping 2021 war drama directed by Ole Bornedal, is now streaming on Netflix and has forced viewers to pass round the tissues for the emotional ordeal.

The Danish film takes place towards the end of Second World War and explores the tragic bombing mission which accidentally targets a school full of children. Set in Copenhagen, Denmark, the film follows the story of a boy named Henry (played by Bertram Bisgaad). The youngster sees a British bomber mistakenly shell a car containing three innocent girls in the countryside.

Years later, the boy witnesses another well-meaning but disastrous British bombing error in which his Catholic school is repeatedly bombed instead of the Nazi HQ nearby. More than 120 were killed, including nuns, teachers, and 86 children.

At the same time, a young novitiate (Fanny Leander Bornedal), who lost her faith in the face of the horrors of war, shamed a young Danish Nazi collaborator (Alex Hogh Andersen) into finding his humanity.

Critics have praised director Ole Bornedal’s direction for bringing the harrowing incident to the big screen. Currently, the historical drama has a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where fans have praised the 107-minute-long film.

One user penned: “As a cold-hearted SOB [son of a b***h] it’s extremely rare to find a film that hits me in the feels, but this one certainly did. Well written and executed and fantastic child actors. This is up there with some of the best war films in my opinion.”

Another agreed: “Haunting and visceral, Ole Bornedal’s beautifully shot film stays in your mind well after it’s over.” A third echoed: “By showing us the people caught at the crossroads of beginnings and endings, this film becomes a timely nod to a difficult truth…”

A fourth echoed: “I thought this film was going to be a slow burn, but I was completely wrong. From storyline to the acting, everything about this movie blew me away.

“Such a tragic tale and the producers, directors, cast, made you feel like you were in the middle of it all. It’s a heartbreaking, true story and you’ll realise how much the innocent suffer during times of war. Don’t miss this one!!”

“Covering the WWII RAD raid Operation Cathage. Some harrowing scenes that added to the realism. And good acting from the children involved”.
