Liverpool could be set for a sensational swap deal that would see Darwin Nunez head to Atletico Madrid in exchange for their star striker Julian Alvarez, as per the insights of ex-Reds midfielder Dietmar Hamann.
The Merseyside giants have been proactive and decisive in their summer signings, and now Hamann has suggested they target Atletico’s World Cup-winning forward, who shone brightly after his departure from Manchester City just a year ago.
Alvarez, having notched up 29 goals for Diego Simeone’s squad, is rumoured to be eyeing a Premier League comeback. Hamann believes a swap with Nunez, who hasn’t quite found his footing at Anfield, would benefit everyone involved.
Despite being Liverpool‘s record signing for around £80m, Nunez has had a tough time securing a regular spot and finding the back of the net consistently over the last three seasons.
Speaking to Wette.de, Hamann expressed his views: “I’d love to see Julian Alvarez at Liverpool and I think Darwin Nunez being part of the deal would make a lot of sense. I think Nunez is tailor made for Atletico Madrid as a physical centre forward, someone who will work so hard which is what Diego Simeone wants.”
He added, “Alvarez would also be a fantastic addition at Liverpool, he played in the shadow of Erling Haaland at Manchester City but really added to his reputation in Madrid. He led the line, scored goals and made life a nuisance for the back lines he played against, I think he would be a brilliant signing.
“There are whispers about other strikers, but Alvarez would be a fantastic addition to Liverpool and Nunez might just be an even better signing for Atletico.”
Alvarez has previously made his mark in the Premier League, impressing during his two-year stint in Manchester. He netted 36 times across both seasons despite playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland.
However, the player himself has shown little inclination to leave the Spanish capital.
Atletico’s club president Enrique Cerezo has also declared: “Julian Alvarez is a player of Atletico de Madrid. He’s very happy here, he is our player and he will remain our player. He was raised at Atletico Madrid and he will die at Atletico Madrid.”
Liverpool have been linked with a new striker as they close in on the signings of Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez. Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike is another man rumoured for a move to Anfield, although there is growing interest in him from other Premier League clubs.
