Royal Ascot Gold Cup day preview
Day three of Royal Ascot, known as Ladies Day, is among the most popular fixtures of the week, with the prestigious Gold Cup taking centre stage on the track.
The action begins with the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, a sharp sprint for two-year-olds. Last year’s renewal was won by Shareholder, trained by Karl Burke, handing another significant success to leading owners Wathnan Racing during the royal meeting.
Race two is the £110,000 King George V Stakes, where Going The Distance triumphed for Ralph Beckett 12 months ago. It’s a contest that has rewarded some of Flat racing’s most prominent trainers in recent years, with William Haggas, Charlie Appleby and Aidan O’Brien all adding their names to the roll of honour. Beckett also won the race in 2021 with Surefire.
The Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes follows, run over a mile and a half. Aidan O’Brien has dominated this contest in recent seasons, landing back-to-back victories with Port Fairy and Warm Heart. Frankie Dettori remains the race’s most successful jockey, riding eight winners, the latest being Frankly Darling in 2020.
Then it’s time for the main event. The Group 1 Gold Cup is the crown jewel of the day, drawing elite stayers from around the globe in the ultimate test of stamina on the Flat.
