Travellers have set up camp on playing fields in Birmingham.

A convoy of caravans are parked up near to the children’s play equipment on Gilbertson Recreation Ground in Yardley.

Images show around half a dozen vehicles which are said to have arrived on Wednesday (June 19).

There are entrances to the park, which has a basketball court, children’s playground and football pitch, off Moat Lane, Manor House Lane and Rowlands Road.

Local Councillor Zak Choudhry who had been out to survey the site said an order had been served on the group.

Councillor Choudhry said: “There are around half a dozen caravans but you can still access the car park.

“An order has been served and hopefully they should be gone by next week.”

He added that the police had been informed.

A Birmingham City Council spokesperson said previously ” Birmingham City Council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it.

“The council has useable transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community – which is in line with Government policy – and details of the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment carried out and updated in 2019 can be found on our website.”

Meanwhile, caravans and vehicles have set up camp at Swanshurst Park in Billesley, for the fifth time this year.

A large group arrived back on the fields on Tuesday, June 17, to the dismay of locals.
