Two riders were DNS over night, with both Anton Palzer of Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe and Max van der Meulen failing to take to the start line for stage 2. During the stage itself, former Italian national champion Filippo Zana then abandoned.

There were a trio of DNFs on stage 3. Among them, Soudal – Quick-Step’s reliable mountain domestique James Knox. Also forced out of the race were Menno Huising and Laurens Huys.

Also on the stage however, INEOS Grenadiers leader Geraint Thomas was caught up in a crash, finishing over 15 minutes down with knee pain.

After not properly recovering from his stage 3 crash, Geraint Thomas was a DNS ahead of stage 4. To make matter worse for the INEOS Grenadiers, they also then lost Laurens De Plus to abandon during the stage. Elsewhere, both Michael Woods and Pelayo Sanchez also left the race.

Two more DNFs on stage 5 as David de la Cruz and Kevin Colleoni both depart the race.
