A ‘hidden gem’ Birmingham restaurant disputed a diner’s story who ‘left out’ key facts during their visit.

When the guest complained about a ‘poor value’ soup, management at the restaurant said they spent ‘over ten minutes’ recommending dishes.

In the end, the Chinese restaurant in Harborne made a soup off-menu and apologised when the customer complained.

The review took place at Wok Chi, located on the Harborne High Street.

Wok Chi has a 4.8 score out of five stars on Google Reviews.

A customer identified as Audrey said: “Cosy, clean and friendly family-run place.

“Lots of regulars always coming in and out. Food is deliciously tasty, generous portions and very reasonably priced.

“A go-to for comfort food Asian style.”

A different diner identified as Jem added: “Easily the best Chinese food in Brum.

“Incredible friendly service, the crispiest chilli beef and chicken I’ve eaten, and overall super tasty food that the camera doesn’t do justice.

“Make sure you order the honey soy wings. Will definitely be going back to this hidden gem.”

And a different reviewer posted: “Warm welcome by the owner who politely seated us at our table.

“Food was very nice and served to us promptly, the plates look amazing especially our favourite dish, the lime seafood rice.

“The ramen was very authentic and flavoursome. We definitely recommend it.”

However, a vegetarian customer was unimpressed with the ‘poor quality’ soup and advised other vegetarians to ‘avoid’ making the same purchase.

The customer said: “The vegetarian soup we ordered was disappointing on every level, essentially spicy water with undercooked vegetables rather than a proper recipe.

“Despite providing feedback about the soup’s poor quality, we were charged the full price.

“As vegetarians seeking quality options, this was both financially and culinarily disappointing.

“I strongly advise fellow vegetarians to avoid the soup offerings here, as they represent poor value and will likely detract from your dining experience.”

Management at Wok Chi responded: “Thank you for sharing your experience, although you have left out some key facts that would reflect the actual occurrence of your visit.

“Firstly you came in without a reservation on a busy Friday evening where we were virtually full but rearranged some bookings in order to free up a table for you.

“We then spent over ten minutes going through our menu with you, explaining and recommending suitable dishes based on your specific requirements.

“However you chose not have anything we suggested and asked us to make something off menu, which we were happy to do, even though the kitchen was already so busy.

“Throughout your meal not once did you say to us the dishes were not to your satisfaction even when we approached you to see if everything was ok.

“You proceeded to eat everything off your plates and bowls, which generally is an indication that it’s at least satisfactory or maybe even enjoyable.

“Upon finishing your meal, you then approached the counter and asked for the bill and it was at this point you decided to give your feedback.

“Had you shared this with us during the start of your meal we would have happily prepared something else for you.

“However since you ate everything and hadn’t informed us at anytime during your meal, we therefore charged accordingly.

“We apologised on the night and we apologise again for not being able to meet your requirements.

“Thank you popping in and giving us a go, we always aim to please, but sorry we disappointed you financially and culinarily.

“Wok Chi is not for everyone I guess.”
