Chris Sutton believes Kyogo Furuhashi is a scorer of ‘big goals’ after the former Celtic striker was linked with a transfer to Birmingham City.

Sky Sports claimed Blues have ‘expressed an interest; in the Japanese forward, who left The Hoops after three-and-a-half prolific seasons in January 2025.

The 30-year-old moved to Rennes for a deal claimed to be worth £10milllion but did not have the desired impact, making only one league start and not scoring in six appearances.

Sky Sports say Blues have made ‘initial contact’ to discuss the outline of any possible transfer as they prepare to continue the momentum built up in League One in the Championship next season. It is said Rennes would be looking recover as much of their initial outlay as possible.

Meanwhile, discussing Celtic’s transfer activity so far this summer, with a deal for Kieran Tierney the only one confirmed, Sutton reckons the loss of a player who scored 85 times for Celtic, cost his club a trophy last season.

“If Celtic had kept Kyogo, I believe they would have run away with the treble this season,” the former Blues striker said.

“I mean, that’s slightly hypothetical to say that because nobody knows, but they lost that quality when they sold him in January.

“People will say, well, he went over to Rennes and didn’t do particularly well there. That wasn’t the point, he scored big goals. He decided big games and he had something which other players didn’t have.

“They should have replaced him in January. They didn’t and I think that’s an area of concern.”

Blues have not be shy of making a splash in the transfer market since Knighthead took over, spending around £14m on Jay Stansfield last summer and with owner Tom Wagner hinting they could splash the cash again in this window.
