A dog owner from Birmingham has been handed a lengthy animal ban after a court heard how he left his dogs with severe, untreated injuries.

Michael Leonard Rowlands of Newstead Road in Kingstanding was investigated after the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) were tipped off about concerns members of the public had for his dog, Kane.

Kane, a Boxer-type dog was believed to have been left to suffer with an untreated injury.

RSPCA officers visited the home and found eight-month-old black and white dog had a large laceration across his entire neck and cheek.

The injury, which had not been seen by a vet, had been caused after a fight between Kane and Michael’s other dog, called Able.

The vet who examined Kane found that he had a large infected wound covering his neck and cheek.

Kane had to be taken to an animal hospital to have his wounds cleaned and surgically treated before being recovered to RSPCA care.

Rowlands, aged 45, pleaded guilty to an animal welfare offence, that between September 14 and 19 2024 he caused unnecessary suffering to Kane by failing to get him vet’s treatment.

And that by not doing so he knew the dog would suffer.

He was jailed for weeks and handed a 10-year animal ban.

RSPCA Inspector Fiona Howell, who investigated for the animal welfare charity, said: “Animals deserve to live healthy lives and are reliant on owners to be given everything they need including vet care if they need medical treatment.”

Rowland’s 10-year ban cannot be appealed for five years and both Kane and Able were signed over to the RSPCA’s care.
