LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – The London-Corbin Airport has a new medical helicopter.
It has been more than a month since the devastating EF-4 tornado ripped through Laurel County, with many still recovering.
The tornado destroyed their previous medical helicopter, leaving the team without a helicopter for 28 days.
“They brought us a new helicopter from Oklahoma and brought that in here. It took us about twenty-eight days to start up again and get everything back in service,” said medic Christopher Whaley.
A base in Oklahoma donated the new helicopter to the team.
‘Dorothy’ is the new helicopter now in service with Air Evac Lifeteam 179.
Robert Collum is a flight nurse for the team and said it felt good to be serving his community again.
“We’ve been trying to help at other bases, but it feels nice to be able to be back in our own community where we know people, form relationships, and help the people that are our neighbors.”
The team is now able to work at their own base.
Collum said the crew is looking forward to also moving into new living quarters soon since the previous one was also damaged by the tornado.
