A new “deliciously gritty” crime drama will apparently “have audiences hooked” when it arrives on Viaplay next week.

Inspired by true events, Mafia is set in 1990s Sweden and explores how the country was transformed from a relatively peaceful nation to one marred by “brutal violence and gang warfare”.

The “gripping” six-part series will follow “criminal visionary” Radovan “Jakov” Jakovic (Peshang Rad), a notorious gangster who quickly makes a name for himself in the dangerous criminal underworld.

Unfortunately for Jakov, “determined and driven” police officer Gunn Thörngren (Katia Winter) is “ahead of the game when it comes to organised crime” and more than capable of serving justice.

“Join Mafia for a powerfully enthralling journey through crime and deep-seated corruption guaranteed to have audiences hooked,” teases the synopsis for the “deliciously gritty” Swedish-language series.

The show will arrive on the streaming service Viaplay, which is available on Prime Video in the UK. The first episode will debut on 23 June, with the 45-minute instalments dropping weekly until 28 July.

Rad and Winter are both acclaimed actors, who have appeared in a number of Swedish titles. Winter is also known for her role as Nadia in Dexter, Katrina Crane in Sleepy Hollow and Gwen Karlsson in Blood & Treasure.

Currently, the star plays Russian mob boss Little Nina in the satirical superhero series The Boys. The show is about to enter its fifth and final season, with Supernatural’s Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins set to join the cast.

Mafia will premiere on Viaplay on 23 June.
