Owen Farrell made his debut as a Sky Sports pundit pitchside at the Aviva Stadium as the British & Irish Lions opened their summer series against Argentina.

The former England skipper was a surprise omission from the touring squad after a stop-start first season at Racing 92, hampered by injuries and inconsistent form. But Lions boss Andy Farrell—his father—has left the door ajar for a potential late call-up.

In the meantime, the 33-year-old has joined Sky’s heavyweight punditry line-up for the 10-match tour. The broadcaster is once again the main partner of the Lions, despite scaling back its wider rugby union coverage.

Farrell, who has often faced intense and sometimes unfair scrutiny during his career, won over viewers with a composed and insightful pitchside debut. His performance was praised for its clarity, honesty, and depth of understanding.

Social media was quick to react:

“Didn’t expect to say this but Owen Farrell is an excellent pundit. Clear, thoughtful, and no ego.”

“Fair play to Farrell. Gets hammered on the pitch, but he just delivered one of the best breakdowns of the Lions backline I’ve heard in years.”

“Owen Farrell pitchside is better than half the studio regulars. Refreshing to hear someone who’s actually played at that level speak with honesty.”

“Always rated him as a player. Might rate him even higher now after that punditry debut.”

“Farrell’s analysis was class. Can see why he captained England—guy just knows the game inside out.”
