With temperatures reaching as high as  31°C (87.8°F) at points across the region, it was a day for families to have a day out in parks, go shopping in outdoor shopping centres or take part in community activities.

In Brierley Hill, the Brierley Hill Community Forum and Cultural Consortium put on a community treasure hunt, with people invited to walk around the town centre and visit shops they might not normally do so, all in very hot and sunny weather.

Organiser Frank Chamberlain said the event was about community cohesionOrganiser Frank Chamberlain said the event was about community cohesion

Frank Chamberlain, who was one of the organisers, said the day was about community cohesion and the hashtag #cakenothate

He said: “People were able to visit shops like the Romanian bakers, an Indian takeaway, an African shop and pick up different items of food from each place.

“They then brought them down to St Michael’s Church, with everything brought in as a picnic, and everyone sat down together and shared conversations and it was all about breaking down barriers.

“We invited members of the LGBTQ+ community, migrant communities and people from the area and we had a great turnout and the weather was good, hot, but with the odd dash of rain to cool things down.”

Elsewhere, Dartmouth Park in West Bromwich basked in the summer sunshine, with families and friends enjoying a picnic or just taking a walk.

Our photographer Tim Sturgess provided these shots of people enjoying the hot weather:
