Glasgow and Dundee have the most crime per population in Scotland.

Figures show there are 83 crimes in Glasgow for every 1,000 people. In Dundee, there are 78 crimes per 1,000 people. The national average is 54 crimes per 1,000 people.

The next councils highest for crime were Edinburgh (72), West Dunbartonshire (66) and Aberdeen (63).

Glasgow’s neighbours, East Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire are in the five lowest areas.

The peaceful Shetland Islands had the overall lowest rate of crime, with just 19 crimes per 1,000 people.

Last year, crimes in Scotland decreased slightly by just over 1 per cent from the previous year.

However, according to the Scottish Crime and Justice Survey (SCJS), one in five adults were the victim of a crime during 2023/24.

Common assault, which includes attempted murder and serious injury, was the highest recorded type of crime. Common assaults accounted for over 90 per cent of overall violent crime in this year.

Last week, First Minister, John Swinney, held an emergency summit on youth violence.

The move follows the tragic deaths of Kayden Moy, 16, on Irvine Beach and Amel Teklay, 15, in Glasgow this year.

There were over 13,000 violent crimes recorded in 2023/24 where a young person was identified as an accused, according to Police Scotland.

Over 60 per cent of these were common assaults and around 30 per cent were for threatening or abusive behaviour.

The Scottish Government has recently announced a 7 per cent increase in funding to more than £1.2m for the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit (VRU).

The increase in spending will try and tackle violence across the country.

On Sunday, a march against knife crime will take place in Glasgow City Centre.

The Parents Against Knives march on June 22 is organised by the family of Kory McCrimmon, who was 16 when he was stabbed to death in a Glasgow park in May last year.

Kory’s family said: “Our aim here is to continue highlighting the increase in deaths and danger by knife and violent crime.

“Our sons and daughters are more than statistics. They deserve better.

“We walk in Kory’s name but we stand for all those lives lost or maimed to knife violence: too much, too many. No more.

“Come join our walk and lend your hearts and voices to making our streets, our young people and our lives safer.”
