Kumud, a transgender rights activist, said the government’s Rs 1,000 monthly pension promise is yet to be fulfilled. “The promise remains only on paper. Around nine persons had been enrolled for the scheme but they received the amount only for two or three months,” she said.

Another activist, Amarjit, added, “Transgender people want to lead their lives with pride. The government promised 2 per cent reservation in jobs for transgenders, but that too remains unfulfilled. Like everyone else, we also need ‘roti, kapda aur makan’ (food, clothing, and shelter). It is the government’s responsibility to ensure we get the same facilities as others.” PTI SAN SAN MNB
