Joanne Froggatt has promised that Downton Abbey 3 will be a satisfying finale to the series.

After 15 years on our screens, the beloved franchise will soon be coming to an end with the aptly titled Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.

The movie, which will be released in cinemas this September, is set to follow the Crawley family and their dynamic staff as they enter into a new decade.

“As the beloved cast of characters navigates how to lead Downton Abbey into the future, they must embrace change and welcome a new chapter,” reads the synopsis.

The upcoming instalment will see a host of familiar faces returning for a final farewell, including actor Froggatt, who plays head housemaid Anna Bates.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Froggatt described the new movie as “really lovely”, promising fans won’t be disappointed by the finale.

“Yeah, I was really satisfied. I actually cried my eyes out when I saw The Grand Finale,” she laughed. “I properly wept for about 10 minutes, because of lots of reasons.”

“Obviously, it’s the end of these characters, but also for us, it’s the end of playing these characters, and it’s the end of this incredible experience we’ve all lived together for 15 years on and off.

“So, for lots of reasons, it was a real full-circle moment, and it was very emotional, sentimental. I think the movie’s lovely, I think it’s really lovely. I think it’s exactly what people will want and hope from the finale.”

The Grand Finale will also see the return of Hugh Bonneville (Robert Crawley), Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley), Kevin Doyle (Joseph Molesley), Jim Carter (Mr Carson) and Paul Giamatti (Harold Levinson).

Meanwhile, the movie will feature a tribute to the late Dame Maggie Smith, who played Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 12 September.
