A woman was sexually assaulted on board a Metrolink tram by a teenage boy, police have said. The suspect, said Greater Manchester Police in an appeal released on Monday, is believed to be aged between 13 and 15.

Police said the victim, whose age hasn’t been revealed, was ‘surrounded by a group of teenage’ boys on a tram bound for Manchester Victoria railway station.

It happened on May 29, but details have only just been confirmed by GMP. The force has appealed for anyone with information to come forward. Transport bosses said they were supporting the ongoing investigation and confirmed police were studying CCTV from the tram.

In a statement, GMP said: “A woman boarded the Victoria-bound tram at Central Park at around 3:30pm on 29 May and she was surrounded by a group of teenage boys.

“She was then sexually assaulted by one of the boys and officers want to identify the suspect, believed to be 13 to 15 years old. Incidents like this are deeply concerning, and we want to reassure the public that we take crimes of this nature incredibly seriously.

“We work with partners like Transport for Greater Manchester to keep people safe on our transport network.”

Danny Vaughan, TfGM’s Chief Network Officer, said: “Everyone who uses public transport is entitled to feel safe, and be safe, at all times, particularly women and girls for who we know safety is a key issue when choosing whether to travel by bus or tram. This was a concerning incident and having provided CCTV from the tram to the police, we will continue to do whatever we can to support the ongoing investigation. I would encourage anyone with information to come forward.”

Information can be reported to police via 101 or the reporting tools on GMP’s website, quoting log 2345-29052025.
