Da Vinci’s Demons actress Lara Pulver also stars in the series alongside Anson Boon from Pistol, Top Boy’s Geoff Bell and Emily Barber best known for Industry.

Chris McCarthy, co chief executive of Paramount said: “With over 26 million viewers and climbing, MobLand has become a resounding triumph.

“We are elated to greenlight a second season of this global phenomenon, which has dominated both domestic and international charts and soared to #1 in the United Kingdom.”

Butterworth said: “TV was a brand-new world for me and I was reluctant to commit to TV overall, but Chris (McCarthy) David (Glasser) and the teams at Paramount and 101 Studios, completely changed my perspective with their bold creative vision and razor-sharp strategic insight.

“Collaborating with Chris, David, Guy (Ritchie) and our stellar cast has been nothing short of inspiring and I’m excited to dive into the second season of MobLand.”

Since series one’s release in the UK at the end of March, the reviews have been coming in thick and fast.

One said: “This is the best start to a Crime Drama series since HBO’s Sopranos and The Wire. The cast is Top Notch and how can you not love anything directed by Guy Ritchie? Tom Hardy as the Enforcer Harry Da Souza for the London Irish crime Family The Harrigans is a brilliant casting choice… I will keep this short because the series so far is off to an incredible start and any Crime Drama Fanatic WILL love it! Don’t miss this series, it’s the most entertaining series in years and even better than The Agency..”

Another commented: “As a fan of Pierce Brosnan from his James Bond tenure and Tom Hardy after nailing it in Mad Max Fury Road, I had to give this crime show a watch. And so far, I’m loving it. To me, it feels like “The Sopranos” in set in the United Kingdom story of crime, plotting, betrayal, loss, and especially vengeance.”

A third shared: “Mobland might be the best programme I’ve watched in years.” A fourth wrote: “MobLand is up there as one of the best tv shows ever made. Guy Ritchie nailed it once again! The storyline, the acting, everything is so, so good. Oh, and Helen Mirren… mind-blowing performance.”

Another posted: “PSA: MobLand may be one of the best shows since the Sopranos. Tom Hardy is a king. Don’t @ me.” A sixth added: “I know I’m late to the party, but OMG, MobLand is absolutely sensational! Tom Hardy and an amazing soundtrack. What’s not to love?”
