Flight data showed it then returned to the airport.

A Birmingham Airport spokesman told BirminghamLive: “Due to a medical emergency on board, an aircraft returned shortly after take-off.

“Our on-site fire service responded to this as a precaution and part of our procedures for an unplanned landing.”

The flight had been scheduled to depart again to the Canary Island after 8pm to make the four hour and 23 minute journey.

It would then have arrived in Tenerife after midnight today (Monday, June 23).
